Tenative Thesis "White Noise"

I am having a difficult time with this essay (well with most essay's) So here is a start to my thesis paragraph, I am sure I will be making changes before its all said and done. Sometimes i like to just get going and once i finish my paper I go back and make it all flow better by taking out or adding! I chose to follow the motif        " Fear of Death".

http://www.gentle-stress-relief.com/fear-of-death.html

Fear is always lurking, some its on the mind more than others. For the fear of death has crossed everyone's mind at some point. However in the book, "White Noise" the fear of death is a constant fear in their minds, it is surrounding them. Each person is dealing with this fear differently; from being completely terrified by it and running from the fear to being amused by it and accepting death for what it is. In this novel it is taught to us that no matter how you deal with death, it will be there at the end waiting for you alone.

criticle essay summary and response

CLOSING THE LOOP: WHITE NOISE ~ Tom LeClair

Tom LeClair provides a great summary and background to "White Noise". LeClairs heading 'closing the loop" is very fitting, he closes the loop of the book by informing more clarity on what, where and why. In the beginning he is comparing it to other books that are out and how the plot very much so follows them so that it fits in with whats popular to the readers eye to get viewing and awards. He than goes into depth on analyzing the book itself. The book becomes a disaster novel due to the chemical cloud, protecting their children they are in denial to the threat. Later only to be exposed to the chemical threat due to their lack of acceptance and preparation. Leading to a long fearful life of "death". He lets it be known by many examples how Jack is an over thinker.  In the end Leclair says " Whitne Noise DeLillo collects the familiar sounds of American culture and universal fear;" (411) and how it is written with irony and exaggeration.

I enjoyed reading this article overall. At times I found myself confused for he was jumping back and fourth in the beginning. However it brought me more clarity of White Noise. I agree with LeClair that this book is exaggerated on related life issues. For that is what grabs attention of the population.

Class Reflection

1. What has been your biggest challenge in this class so far? What has been your biggest success?
-My biggest challenge so far would be the writting assignments, which is also my weakness. I am just not very good at writting or big assignments for that matter. I stress out and procastinate which isnt good. I get stressed out and just walk away from it. I would say my bigges success is keeping up with the blogs and comments, i had no idea how to blog before this class. It isnt so bad either.

2. How have the readings in the class affected you?
~The reading have definetly been difficult for me to follow, they are outta my normal reading limits by far. I find myself rereading over and over, yet still kinda confused. I am not a fan of older readings, so i think that is my struggle with it. I read books, but i guess 'easier" more today books.

3. How is literary analysis different from other types of writing you have done in college?
~ The only writting i have done thus far is fairly simple, pick a topic and write a essay. Therefore having limits as to what to read, and how to write it is a bit more narrow and difficult for someone who isnt a fan of writing.

4. What are your goals for the second half of the session? What do you hope to improve or accomplish?
- My goals are to stay more on top of the class, work ahead because it is SO easy for me to put it off and fall behind. I find myself the night before its all do up late with coffee trying to do it. (i know thats not what any professor wants to hear) I have the time during the week to work on it so I would like to do so. Make it less stressful, and more than likely a better grade. I would like to accomplish a better grade then I am getting now, therefore i need to improve my work!

tenative thesis

In the text ‘A modest proposal’ by Jonathan Swift, the issue brought to light is the over population in the early 1700’s. Swift proposes his idea that the lower class sell their infant children to the rich as food, he argues how this would not only lessen the burden of them, but help the public. Stating “..that a young healthy child well nursed is at a year old a most delicious, nourishing, and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled”. Although Swift’s idea is unrealistic by nature and sarcastic, he sure raises quite an argument while bringing the issue to light.

Response to Swift

What is the problem that Swift identifies in his society?  What does he want to do about it?
~ In  A Modest Proposal Swift identifies the problem in society as the population of the poor seems to be multiplying more then they can afford. Women are having babies that they can not afford to take care of, where as they themselves are not well taken care of.  Swift paints a picture for you as you read, of these babies just over a year old crawling behind their mothers so helplessly up to their early teens, on the streets starving, malnourished looking, begging for food, money and help. He prompts the idea of taking these innocent poor children, who aren't going to make it far by living this life style poorly, and selling them to plump them up and eat at a prime age.

Is his suggestion serious?  If not, what is the purpose?  What is he making fun of?
~ It was hard for me to follow swifts essay on this subject. As I caught what he was prompting to state his scheme to help solve this issue, I just could not take it seriously. I personally did not take him seriously, nor do I think he was being serious. I feel as if he was proving a point, he made valid points explaining what it would be like and why. However I believe he was trying to get the point across that either way you are killing your children, innocent people. Even if this seems so far fetch they are dying off anyways, they can not seem to stop producing even though they fail to provide when they are born, therefore instead of dying off from disease, malnourishment or staying in this unlivable life style themselves, and later adding to the problem by producing more.

Is his solution logical?  What kind of evidence does he give to support his position?
~ I think swift did a great job as to convincing you to think its logical. He had evidence to comparing it to ways we live now, breeding and living off of animals. However no I did not find this logical.

'It's not complicated'
I chose this commercial because it's the first one that came to mind. Recently these AT&T commercials have my boyfriend and I cracking up. The audience would be a parent or anyone who loves kids, which is a pretty big audience I would say. It totally draws you in by the funny innocent things that the kids are saying. It isn't some bogus skinny girl eating a big mac, i think we all roll our eyes at that like 'ya right'. This is a innocent commercial as to what a child would answer, so that draws you in makes you laugh the entire time. Then at the end they keep it simple by saying, AT&T Doing two things at once - 'It's not complicated' is their logo on every commercial. It just sticks with you, however it wasn't effective for me because I already have a cell phone. But if I didn't they would have drew me in.

Summary VS Analysis

A summary is a recap of the story, telling all of the main points. It doesn't leave the reader curious as to what

will happen yet it doesn't give specific detail. It gives no opinion from the writer therefore there is no

argument or question. However it is telling the information in the writers own words, just using the main

points. You are summarizing the book, movie, article etc exactly how it is as if you were doing a report.

Every main point is in order as if you are rewriting a shorter version.

A analysis is almost opposite of a summary. It allows for focus on certain parts of the book. movie, article

etc. Opening the door to discussion, arguments and curiosity. It does have to tell the reader every main point

leaving things unknown. Analysis is the writers opinion, there fore you could read ten analysis from the same

book and everyone of them may be different, opening your eyes to things the other analysis did not. In a

way like a review of a product.
