criticle essay summary and response

CLOSING THE LOOP: WHITE NOISE ~ Tom LeClair

Tom LeClair provides a great summary and background to "White Noise". LeClairs heading 'closing the loop" is very fitting, he closes the loop of the book by informing more clarity on what, where and why. In the beginning he is comparing it to other books that are out and how the plot very much so follows them so that it fits in with whats popular to the readers eye to get viewing and awards. He than goes into depth on analyzing the book itself. The book becomes a disaster novel due to the chemical cloud, protecting their children they are in denial to the threat. Later only to be exposed to the chemical threat due to their lack of acceptance and preparation. Leading to a long fearful life of "death". He lets it be known by many examples how Jack is an over thinker.  In the end Leclair says " Whitne Noise DeLillo collects the familiar sounds of American culture and universal fear;" (411) and how it is written with irony and exaggeration.

I enjoyed reading this article overall. At times I found myself confused for he was jumping back and fourth in the beginning. However it brought me more clarity of White Noise. I agree with LeClair that this book is exaggerated on related life issues. For that is what grabs attention of the population.

Class Reflection

1. What has been your biggest challenge in this class so far? What has been your biggest success?
-My biggest challenge so far would be the writting assignments, which is also my weakness. I am just not very good at writting or big assignments for that matter. I stress out and procastinate which isnt good. I get stressed out and just walk away from it. I would say my bigges success is keeping up with the blogs and comments, i had no idea how to blog before this class. It isnt so bad either.

2. How have the readings in the class affected you?
~The reading have definetly been difficult for me to follow, they are outta my normal reading limits by far. I find myself rereading over and over, yet still kinda confused. I am not a fan of older readings, so i think that is my struggle with it. I read books, but i guess 'easier" more today books.

3. How is literary analysis different from other types of writing you have done in college?
~ The only writting i have done thus far is fairly simple, pick a topic and write a essay. Therefore having limits as to what to read, and how to write it is a bit more narrow and difficult for someone who isnt a fan of writing.

4. What are your goals for the second half of the session? What do you hope to improve or accomplish?
- My goals are to stay more on top of the class, work ahead because it is SO easy for me to put it off and fall behind. I find myself the night before its all do up late with coffee trying to do it. (i know thats not what any professor wants to hear) I have the time during the week to work on it so I would like to do so. Make it less stressful, and more than likely a better grade. I would like to accomplish a better grade then I am getting now, therefore i need to improve my work!

tenative thesis

In the text ‘A modest proposal’ by Jonathan Swift, the issue brought to light is the over population in the early 1700’s. Swift proposes his idea that the lower class sell their infant children to the rich as food, he argues how this would not only lessen the burden of them, but help the public. Stating “..that a young healthy child well nursed is at a year old a most delicious, nourishing, and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled”. Although Swift’s idea is unrealistic by nature and sarcastic, he sure raises quite an argument while bringing the issue to light.
